Viveve® Geneveve™ – Nonsurgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Just like skin, vaginal tissue is made up of collagen fibers. Over time, or with trauma, the collagen can lose its strength and shape, creating the feeling of looseness (laxity)—especially around the vaginal opening. Common causes of vaginal laxity include childbirth, aging, genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and other physical stress on the tissue. Most of the solutions currently available can be invasive, lack efficacy, and require multiple treatments…. until now!
In a survey of over 500 OB/GYNs, vaginal laxity was the #1 reported post-delivery physical change in women. Similarly, in a survey of over 400 women, almost 50% felt that vaginal laxity was a concern post-childbirth. However, despite the prevalence of this issue, 60% of women said they do not share their concerns with anyone. Common reasons for this include feeling like nothing can be done about it, as well as embarrassment that others wouldn’t understand.
Symptoms of Vaginal Laxity
Vaginal laxity can affect each person differently. Some of the following symptoms may indicate weakening, thinning, or disruption of collagen in the vaginal wall:
- Stress urinary incontinence (leakage of urine with sneezing, laughing, or exercise)
- Painful intercourse
- Loss of arousal
- Loss of ability to orgasm
Why Women Choose Vaginal Tightening/Rejuvenation
Women often view improving vaginal laxity as a benefit for both them and their partner. The advantages of vaginal rejuvenation with Viveve® Geneveve™—offered by our San Jose plastic surgeons—can lead to enhanced satisfaction, confidence, and orgasms. Relationships and physical sensation frequently benefit from this treatment, as well.
During your consultation for the state-of-the-art Viveve® Geneveve™ treatment, our nurse practitioner will go over certain questionnaires with you and perform an external exam. In addition, we require that you have had a normal gynecological exam within the last three years. The ideal candidate is not pregnant or premenopausal, with mild or moderate vaginal laxity. Prior to treatment, patients typically have reported dissatisfaction with the change in amount of sensation or tightness during sexual intercourse (or noticed a decrease in sexual satisfaction during intercourse) following vaginal delivery.
Contraindications include patients who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or have had pelvic organ prolapse. Other conditions that may prohibit a patient from receiving treatment include if an exam reveals a thin recto-vaginal septum or a sexually transmitted disease (e.g., genital warts or herpes). Additionally, Viveve® Geneveve™ cannot be used in patients with implantable pacemakers, defibrillators, or other implantable electrical devices.
How it Works
Volumetric radiofrequency (RF) is delivered 3-5mm into the vaginal tissue to stimulate new collagen production. This ultimately creates tighter tissue, better lubrication, and firmer support of the urethra. Gentle, deep heating stimulates the body’s natural collagen formation process, revitalizing and tightening tissue just inside the vaginal opening. The patented and unique surface cooling mechanism is designed to make the treatment comfortable and safe.
The non-ablative RF energy activates fibroblasts that produce new collagen fibers, and initiates the tissue response of collagen remodeling. Collagen restoration takes time, but usually occurs within 30-90 days of treatment. The collagen remodeling improves the integrity of the genital pelvic tissue in close proximity to the clitoral body, resulting in improved sexual function. The additional collagen can also improve urinary continence.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure, which is performed by one of our nurses or nurse practitioners, typically takes about 30 minutes and does not require local or topical anesthesia or analgesics. During treatment, five full passes are made with 0.5 cm overlapping intervals. Patients typically describe their experience as comfortable, with a slight tingling sensation. Sensitive tissues throughout the targeted area remain unharmed, due to the device’s unique patented cooling mechanism.
Recovery following vaginal rejuvenation treatment with Viveve® Geneveve™ is relatively simple and straightforward. This innovative procedure is a clinically proven single-session treatment that can safely and comfortably revitalize vaginal tissue for women seeking to effectively restore sensation and improve sexual satisfaction. In the only multi-center, randomized, blinded, sham-controlled trials, 90% of women treated reported statistically significant sustained tightening and increased sexual satisfaction starting as early as 30 days, and extending up to 12 months after treatment. Patients typically return to normal activities immediately, but should refrain from intercourse or tampons for at least 72 hours.
In the first randomized, sham-controlled study ever of an energy-based device used for vaginal laxity, statistically significant improvement in both laxity and sexual function were noted. Significant and sustained improvements were noted beyond the study period, as well. Arousal and orgasm were reported as improved for nine out of ten patients.
