Cellfina™ Smooth That Lasts

cellfina-cellulite-treatmentOften described as dimpling or “orange peel,” cellulite can affect women of any size and can occasionally develop in men as well. Cellulite can be caused by numerous factors, including changes in hormone levels, fibrous fat, genetics, slow metabolism, and dehydration. Until now, there were no long-lasting non-surgical treatments. The Cellfina System, a state-of-the-art technique for cellulite reduction, can help to smooth the buttocks, hips, legs and other areas of concern using a minimally invasive approach that is designed to last up to three years or more.

Performed in an office setting, Cellfina addresses the underlying cause of cellulite using proven and innovative technologies and should be performed by a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Jerome H. Liu and Dr. Tom S. Liu, as well as our skilled medical staff, are excited to offer this advanced modality at our practice. In fact, Liu Plastic Surgery was one of the first groups to receive the device in the United States in 2015 and the first in the San Jose/Los Gatos area. To date, Liu Plastic Surgery has one of the largest clinical experiences successfully using the device.

If you’re suffering from dimpled fatty tissue, the Cellfina System is FDA-cleared to reduce the appearance of cellulite without the downtime associated with a surgical procedure. For more information, or to schedule a consultation, please contact us today.

Why People Choose Cellfina

In the past, if you wanted to improve the appearance of cellulite, you had to choose between unproven short-term topical treatments or unpredictable and inconsistent surgical treatment with more extensive downtime. With the Cellfina System, you can reduce dimpling in as little three days following a short, minimally invasive procedure that typically lasts about 45 minutes, depending on your unique needs and number of areas you would like addressed. Furthermore. Cellfina has been shown in clinical trials to last at least three years.

The Consult

The initial consult will take approximately 30 minutes. During the consult we will obtain some basic medical information and understand your areas of concern. Following this, we can develop a customized treatment plan that can optimize your outcome.

How it Works

The main anatomic cause of cellulite is fibrous connective tissue bands located in the fatty tissue. These connective bands tether the skin creating the dimpled appearance of cellulite. The Cellfina System uses a revolutionary system that precisely releases the tethering bands. Once these bands are loosened, the skin bounces back and naturally returns to a smoother, more aesthetically appealing form.

Liu Plastic Surgery was also featured on ABC 7 News demonstrating how this new procedure works.

What to Expect

The procedure is easily done under local anesthesia in the office setting. Some supplemental oral medicine can be used to lessen the anxiety and discomfort. Using a controlled applicator, gentle suction will be applied allowing the Cellfina System to utilize a small, needle-sized device to precisely release the tethered bands within the affected tissue. The light, rapid, repeated pressure employed by the apparatus will cause the bands to fray and unfasten, ultimately leading to smoother skin in that region. Most patients report minimal discomfort during this process, and we will strive to make the experience as pleasant as possible.

You will likely experience tenderness and bruising in the treated area following the procedure, which should subside within a few days to weeks. There are no known serious or long-term side effects for Cellfina. In most cases, you should be able to return to normal activity immediately following treatment. A single session may be sufficient to achieve your desired results, although additional sessions may provide more comprehensive benefits. Cellfina is designed to last at least three years, and occasional maintenance therapy can help extend the results.

Cellfina FAQs

What is the Cellfina System?

Cellfina is the only FDA-cleared minimally invasive procedure clinically proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for three years – the longest FDA clearance for a cellulite treatment. Cellfina is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon in an office procedure room with just local anesthesia. The unique technology of Cellfina is combined with a proven approach allowing to treat the structural cause of cellulite. The end-result is a smoother and healthier look in the thighs and buttocks that brings more confidence to patients to wear a bathing suit, form fitting clothing, and higher hemlines.

Where is Cellfina available?

As of October 20, 2015, there are only 28 machines deployed throughout the United States. Of these, 6 are in California and only 2 are in the San Francisco Bay Area. Physicians with early availability were hand picked by Merz to begin the roll out of this highly acclaimed product. Liu Plastic Surgery is honored to be one of the practices selected to participate in the early launch of Cellfina.

How does the Cellfina System work?

Cellfina works by combining the time-tested technique of subcision with innovative technology that allows for precise depth release of cellulite bands. Cellfina releases the connective bands woven throughout subcutaneous fat that cause the visible skin dimpling. By allowing for precise uniform treatment at a specified depth, Cellfina is able to fully release the tethering bands. Similar to a rubberband under tension, the treated skin bounces back to a smoother appearance after it is released in as little as three days.

Am I a good candidate for Cellfina?

Cellfina is a great, long-lasting solution for patients who want to smooth away cellulite. The Cellfina System addresses the primary structural cause of cellulite by releasing the connective bands present in fat tissue that pull the skin and create puckering. Although anyone with cellulite is potentially a candidate for Cellfina, the system works best on patients with dimples in the skin, as opposed to rippling, due to the nature of its technology. At a consultation appointment, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Liu Plastic Surgery can determine how you can benefit from this state-of-the-art technology.

How long does the procedure take?

The Cellfina System can reduce the appearance of cellulite in patients in just one easy, in-office appointment. The total duration of the actual procedure is usually less than one hour, but it does depend on the number of treatment areas that need to be addressed. You will also spend some time in the office before the procedure for forms, photos and markings.

Does Cellfina hurt?

The Cellfina System uses a minimally invasive approach to eliminate cellulite. It is performed under local anesthesia in an office setting. At the beginning of the procedure, an anesthetic solution is delivered to the targeted areas. Using a gentle suction device, the targeted tissue is stabilized and a needle is inserted to administer the anesthetic medication. During this part of the procedure, patients do feel a small pinch and a slight burning sensation that rapidly goes away as the medication kicks in. Once the medication is delivered, the remainder of the procedure is often painless. After the medication has had time to take effect, the suction device is used again to isolate the targeted areas and bring the skin taut, allowing the connective bands that cause skin dimpling to be stretched. A small, needle-sized device then releases the tethering bands at specified depths underneath the skin. Each targeted area is treated as the patient is awake and comfortably lying down. During the treatment phase, patients should not feel any pain. Patients can relax and listen to their own music while the board-certified plastic surgeons at Liu Plastic Surgery utilize the Cellfina System to smooth their skin’s appearance.

What is the recovery like?

Once treatment with the Cellfina System is complete, absorbent dressings are placed over the treatment areas and the patient is transitioned into a compression garment. During the immediate postoperative period, fluid (which includes the anesthetic medication with a slight tinge of blood) will seep from the treatment areas for up to 12 hours. We recommend that patients use plenty of towels and padding to capture this spotting. Side effects from the Cellfina procedure include swelling, soreness, tenderness, and bruising. There might be some red or brownish spots at the treatment sites resulting from the puncture of the needle during the procedure. Fluid accumulation within treatment areas is a normal part of the healing process as new tissue is being formed. A smoother appearance where dimples once were can be seen as soon as the swelling dissipates. Patients experience very minimal down time and can return to their normal daily routine in just a few days!

Cellfina vs. Cellulaze - Which one is better?

Both Cellfina and Cellulaze are approved devices for the surgical treatment of cellulite but each technology is very different. Cellulaze is a angled laser-liposuction device that attempts to release the cellulite band by tunneling through the fat from the entry point to the targeted area. The cannula of the Cellulaze device is much bigger than the Cellfina microscalpel. Since the Cellulaze cannula must be tunneled there is a potentially long travel distance from where it enters the skin to where the cellulite band is which can affect accuracy and prolong the healing process. Cellfina uses a stabilized suction ring to isolate the premarked cellulite dimple and then uses a microscalpel to release the dimples. The microscalpel is the size of a needle and the release is direct with minimal trauma to normal tissues between the entry point and cellulite dimple. While both the Cellfina System and Cellulaze work by addressing the structural cause of cellulite, the Cellfina system has the longest clinical efficacy indication of all cellulite treatments at 3 years and has an impressively high patient satisfaction rate of over 90%.

Does weight change affect Cellfina results?

Cellulite can affect patients of any weight. Therefore, any significant change in weight, either higher or lower, can affect your results. In addition, weight change can affect one’s overall contour and weight gain or loss can influence the overall aesthetic of the waist, buttock, thigh area. In general, we recommend patients to be at their usual or ideal body weight and to maintain a healthy lifestyle both before and after treatment.

Can Cellfina treat all parts of my body?

The most common areas of cellulite are in the buttocks and in the thighs. Cellfina is FDA cleared for the buttock and the back (posterior) of the thighs. We have treated other areas with success but these would be considered off-label. The basic principle remains the same as the Cellfina System precisely releases the tethering fibrous bands anywhere on the body allowing the skin to bounce back and naturally return to a smoother, more aesthetically appealing form. At the consultation appointment, the board-certified plastic surgeons at Liu Plastic Surgery will discuss how Cellfina can help you!

How effective is Cellfina? How long will my results last?

Cellfina is highly effective and works best on dimpled cellulite. Result can be seen in as little as 3 days, and high patient satisfaction is maintained for years thereafter. In clinical tests, Cellfina results have been shown to last beyond three years, which is the longest FDA-clearance for any cellulite treatment currently available on the market! The satisfaction rates far exceed that of other available cellulite treatments. Satisfaction was over 90% at one, two, and three years following the procedure. We encourage our patients to come in for their follow-up assessments so that we can continue to monitor them for the best aesthetic result.

How much does Cellfina cost?

Every Cellfina treatment is personalized and based on the number of target areas so the total cost can vary for each patient. Depending on the number of areas to be treated and the amount of time it will take, costs range from $3,500 to $5,000. During your consultation and examination, we will develop a personalized treatment plan and one of our staff will present you with a quote and help you schedule an your procedure for smoother skin!
