What to Expect From Tummy Tuck Surgery

photo748Fall and winter are popular seasons to consider an abdominoplasty, commonly called tummy tuck surgery, as many patients spend additional time at home for holidays and vacation. This procedure is particularly appealing to mothers and individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, as it is designed to eliminate excess skin, reduce stubborn fat pockets, and tighten underlying muscles of the abdomen. Many patients even indulge in the body contouring procedure as an early holiday gift–to enhance not only their appearance but also their confidence. Regardless of the reasons for considering abdominoplasty, there are several factors that can help individuals determine whether it may be an appropriate treatment for them.

During the initial consultation, either Dr. Jerome Liu or Dr. Tom Liu, our experienced plastic surgeons, will perform an examination, discuss patient goals, and clarify expectations. From there, they will customize a treatment plan that addresses the unique concerns of the individual, which may include recommending additional procedures, such asliposuction, to best achieve the desired outcome.

While each person is unique, most tummy tuck procedures are completed within two to three hours. Depending on the patient, anesthesia can range for epidural with twilight to general anesthesia. Dr. Jerome Liu or Dr. Tom Liu will place the incision as inconspicuously as possible–low along the tummy and typically hidden by many popular styles of clothing and swimwear. For mothers who previously received a C-section, this scar can often be removed during the operation.

Recovery is very important to achieve successful abdominoplasty results. Patients are asked to take one to two weeks away from work and normal activities to rest. Strenuous exercise and activity should be avoided for about three to four weeks if the stomach muscles were tightened, or for however long the surgeon recommends. Tummy tuck surgery typically has long-lasting results, and we urge our patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to help preserve the outcome long term.
