Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair Restoration
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a technique that utilizes platelets from your own blood to help stimulate cell regeneration. PRP Therapy has been ideal for facilitating wound healing, and is used in a variety of other medical and cosmetic procedures, including hair restoration. The introduction of PRP into targeted areas can encourage hair regrowth by restoring necessary nutrients to inactive hair follicles. This state-of-the-art treatment has enabled Dr. Jerome Liu and Dr. Tom Liu help men and women successfully grow a fuller, thicker head of hair.
Am I a Candidate for PRP Therapy?
PRP Therapy for hair restoration is intended to revitalize inactive/dormant hair follicles, ultimately leading to regrowth of hair. Individuals who do not have hair follicles in the areas where hair restoration is desired may not be considered ideal candidates for this procedure. During your initial consultation, one of our skilled plastic surgeons (or our dedicated aesthetic nurse practitioner) can assess your situation and determine if PRP Therapy is an appropriate treatment to address your concerns.
Benefits of Hair Restoration with PRP Therapy
Hair restoration with PRP Therapy has helped numerous patients improve the thickness and fullness of their hair. Treatment is minimally-invasive, administered in our office, and typically only takes about an hour—so many individuals prefer PRP Therapy as an alternative to surgical hair restoration procedures. Additionally, women and men with thinning hair who have been treated with PRP Therapy often report a boost in self-confidence after results have become apparent.
The PRP Therapy Process
To initiate the PRP treatment, a member of our trained medical staff will first need to draw a small amount of your blood. The blood will then be specially processed in a closed-system centrifuge, allowing the platelet-rich plasma to be separated from the blood. Once it has been isolated, the PRP solution can be delivered down into the targeted hair follicles through the use of very fine needles.
Prior to your PRP procedure, a topical anesthetic can be applied to ensure you remain comfortable during treatment. Once injected, the PRP solution can help restore blood supply and proper nutrients to any dormant hair follicles in the targeted area, ultimately regenerating hair growth. Some patients may require multiple PRP sessions (spaced approximately one month apart) to achieve desired results.
Recovery from PRP Therapy
Following PRP Therapy for hair restoration, patients may feel a sensation similar to that of a mild sunburn in the treated area, but this should resolve relatively quickly. Throughout recovery, Dr. Jerome Liu and Dr. Tom Liu advise patients to avoid anything that may affect proper healing, such as anti-inflammatory medications. This helps to ensure the best possible results. Your doctor will provide more specific recovery instructions based on your individual needs.
