Interview with Dr. Tom Liu

Dr. Liu continued his medical training at the UCLA Medical Center, earning a place in the highly competitive general surgery-plastic surgery program, which accepts only one position per year. During this time, he further developed his passion for aesthetic plastic surgery, along with microvascular surgery which is critical in advanced reconstructive surgery.

At the conclusion of his plastic surgery training, Dr. Liu underwent an extra year of subspecialty fellowship training at the Plastic Surgery Institute in San Francisco. This is one of the only programs that offers both aesthetic surgery training and advanced microsurgery training. During this fellowship, Dr. Liu learned from world leaders in plastic surgery, becoming an expert in specialized techniques in facial plastic surgery, breast procedures, and aesthetic body procedures--along with injectables and microsurgery with a focus on breast reconstruction. Dr. Liu is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only plastic surgery board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Throughout his career, Dr. Liu has authored countless articles that were published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Annals of Plastic Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has additionally written book chapters covering microsurgery, breast reconstruction, facelift surgery, and the economics of the plastic surgery industry.
